But besides the fact lets break him dowm as a character/persona and see what purpose he brings to the story of Tokyo Ghoul Re.
His Entire Run [well the Important parts]
Black reaper Kaneki was born in Tokyo Ghoul Re: Episode 12 and Chapters 53 and died at Chapter 86 or 85 (take your pick).
His Clash with Eto
His Fight Eto wasn't really a fight imo, it was more of exchange as Kaneki didn't really seem so interested in Eto, while Eto was interested in Kaneki. Comparing him to Arima, there little clash or exchange was only happening to get us the reader into Black Reaper as a persona and see how he acts and behaves.
He remembers he is Kaneki and the moment with his friends and the first he basically does as he finished his clash with Eto is toss Shuu off a building knowing he gonna fall to his death but instead of the death of Shuu. Rosewald dies as She save Shuu as her final act to server her master.
After when does that he eats the left over Kagune of Eto and we meets the rest of the Q-Squad, he confronted by Urie who demand to know where he was at, as Shirazu wanted to see him before he past on, but Kaneki just turns it around and makes Urie feel like shit basically saying it was Urie fault that Shirazu died and then Kaneki goes comfort Shirazu dead body.
(ahhh I dislike this so much but it's need for this persona I guess )
The Events of fighting Arima
During Kaneki attempt to free Hinami and he had one purpose in mind after that and that was to die by Arima hands, leaving the two groups of people who loved and care about him. This is well selfish as He knows they care about but this act was foolish as Yomo and Ayato could have lost there lives to Arima who he knows wouldn't hesitate to kill them. The whole concept of this plan to free Hinami was good on paper but terrible in reality.
He Only sudden change the idea of him not dying by Arima is because Touka told to come see her after this, But so on during his fight with Arima. He is so out of league in this match as Arima could fatally strike him over 600 times
The black Reaper was being destroy by the Actual Reaper of The Tokyo Ghoul Universe, it poetic if you looked at it, The Official Reaper Vs A self-called persona of a Reaper. As the fight or slaughter take your pick goes on it's gets sad for Kaneki as we clearly see that this no f's given kaneki is being beaten and it's shocking yet not, as each time we see a new persona we automatically figure Kaneki is gonna Overpower them and win but against Arima it's not the case at all. Kaneki is fighting to keep his memories safe as Arima is Kaneki reset button.
The End of a Reaper well Two
As the fight comes to an end with Arima broken Quinque and Kaneki standing face to face, Arima asked if Kaneki will kill him and Kaneki simply says no because the Black Reaper had died during the fight and regular Kaneki had came back.
Arima the actual winner as he brought back our Kaneki, A Kaneki who doesn't want senseless blood shed so with that Arima takes his own life passing the Mantle of One eye King to Kaneki getting us one eye King Kaneki V1 and starting a new chapter in Kaneki life by killing the black reaper and creating a new persona of Kaneki a persona that supposed to lead the ghouls hope.
