At first sight Cossacks looks like a straightforward Age of Empires clone - a historical real-time strategy game featuring all the familiar base building, gold mining, stone quarrying and wood chopping of Ensemble's games, but set in the 17th and 18th centuries. What sets Cossacks apart is its epic scope.

Submitted on 9/1/2018 Review title of RubenAI is way too overpowered and brokenThe additions of building new structures, tactics, and the random events is nice but it doesn't matter if the AI just completely gets a one sided advantage. Very first match had the AI use 2 sides to destroy a large part of my army. I then switch sides and suddenly the AI that would've helped me do the same seems to get cold feet and run away. I then changed the era to a smaller map and apparently my enemy has a ton of events. One enemy got back to back boosts giving tons of resources and a morale boost while I got an extra 50 research points.
That's incredibly broken and not worth the hassle of being curb stomped by such a one sided system. Submitted on Review title of NealEUro war 4 with minor changesThis game is a good return to one of my favorite series of all time. However, this game kinda feels less like a euro war game and more like a World of Conquerors with the exact same skin of Euro war 4, and it kinda feels like euro war 4 2, if that makes any sense. Not much free play to try different strategies. You must hold this city, or take that city, you have no alternatives. And how come the AI starts off rich and with a large army, while the English Empire starts off with a hundred bucks and a leaky canoe? It's a good start for a game, but loosen up on the game play and be a little more fair to the non-computer player.
Cossacks may seem like one of those games played by people who collect those Warfare Through The Ages -With Free Binder!' magazines, but there's a lot to enjoy about this historical based RTS. For a start, it's a true epic, set between the 16th and 18th centuries and focused on thousands of troops engaging in mass slaughter across 3D terrains.Unlike Shogun: Total War, these troops, which feature units like French Chasseur infantry and of course the Ukrainian Cossacks, can be moved individually as well as in large formations, adding an extra strategic element to proceedings. Also, unlike Shogun, Cossacks combines quite a bit of resource management, so you can create thriving cities full of peasants and gently ripening cornfields. With two expansion packs of its own, plus a spin-off game, American Conquest (which also has its own expansion), the Cossacks formula has certainly been well used and the engine now looks rather dated alongside fully 3D RTS games.
But if you're a hardcore strategy fan and a virgin to Cossacks, it's well worth investing five shiny coins for this. Amazing world of gumball darwin.
